Director of Tax

About the Role

As the Director of Tax, you will ensure all funds and investments going through the product are supported— from customer questions, proactive customer education, and thought leadership pieces, to completing tax returns, ensuring tax compliance, and developing better and more automated ways of completing the above. If you like breaking down and explaining complex concepts, and you often seek out efficiencies in your own work, this job is a good fit.

About the Team

The Tax Team is mission-critical to ensuring Sydecar’s success. The team is responsible for leading the tax component of our product roadmap, supporting and educating the company and our customers on tax laws and procedure, and developing expert level knowledge on the tax implications for our industry. As a result, the tax team is truly cross functional— you will have the opportunity to work with all teams and interface with customers. Currently the Tax Team is made up of the VP Finance and Sr. Tax Associate, and now requires a Director of Tax or higher to oversee more complex tax matters as they apply to our product offering.

What You’ll Do

You will work alongside our VP of Finance and a network of external tax advisors to build sustainable processes and systems that automate tax return preparation and address customer inquiries. The ideal candidate will be excited about working in a fast-paced startup and creating leverage and efficiency through automation.

Tax Preparation

  • Utilize technology automation to connect product data to tax software to prepare partnership tax returns and Schedules K1, K2, and K3 for SPVs and Funds on or before Jan 31 of the year.

  • Able to independently conduct research and analysis to resolve complex tax questions and interpret tax laws and regulations.

  • Select and manage a tax vendor software system.

Tax Support

  • Respond to customer inquiries for information or clarification regarding their annual tax documents as well as any investments contemplated to be run on our platform.

  • Respond to in-house inquiries regarding tax implications of investing in certain investments.

  • Proactively communicate tax matters to customers and staff.

  • Build and maintain a knowledge base to educate our stakeholders with respect to tax matters and why we prepare tax documents the way we do.

Tax Automation

  • Liaise with the Product team on building capabilities that connect investment events to tax software.

  • Ensure that all events that occur in our ledger are accurately mapped to tax events.

Tax Strategy and Risk Management

  • Stay up-to-date with changes in tax laws, regulations, and best practices, and proactively assess their impact on our customers’ products.

  • Monitor and maintain compliance with all federal, state, local, and international tax regulations.

  • Liaise with outside tax advisors and tax counsel, as necessary.
